Green Tea

Green tea is one of nature's superfoods, and comes highly recommended by countless nutritionists and herbalists around the world. If you're looking to lose body fat, increase your energy levels, or just increase your general health and wellbeing - chances are green tea can help!

What is Green Tea?

Green tea is the name given to the leaves of the camellia sinensis plant, which originates in China. Green tea has been used as a traditional medicine in Asia for thousands of years, and is consumed daily by a large percentage of the world's population.

Where can I get Green Tea from?

Green tea is readily available, on its' own and in blend with other foods and beverages. Green tea bags and leaves are available in most supermarkets and Asian grocery stores, and it is commonly served in Chinese restaurants. What are Green Tea's Benefits?

Green tea has a vast number of benefits, in both traditional medicine and modern research. A certain ingredient in green tea - epigallotcatechin gallate (EGCG) - is responsible for many of its health benefits, and many green tea extracts are standardised for this ingredient. Some of the many benefits of green tea are:

What are Green Tea's Side Effects?

The side effects of green tea consumption are almost non-existent at low doses, and are usually associated with its caffeine content. High doses of green tea may lead to stomach discomfort, as well as negative effects of caffeine overdose, such as irritability, increased heart rate, insomnia and restlessness.

Who should use Green Tea?

Green tea (especially decaffeinated and low-caffeine green tea) can be consumed by anyone looking to gain some of the many health benefits. Anyone with a high sensitivity to or restricted intake of caffeine should moderate their consumption.

Green Tea Dosage

Depending on your goals, your consumption of green tea will vary. For overall health and wellbeing, anywhere from 1-3 brewed cups of green tea will provide benefits without the increased caffeine levels. The amount of EGCG in commercially available green tea varies significantly, and it's estimated to be anywhere between 15mg and 100mg of EGCG per bag. The optimal amount of EGCG for fat loss is approximately 300mg/day, so three cups would be the minimum amount to achieve this level. Of course, green tea extracts are standardised for EGCG and usually show the exact amount contained in the supplement.

Green Tea Supplements
