Especially important for those aged in their thirties or later, testosterone boosters have become increasingly popular as a bodybuilding supplement as trainers realise the benefits they can provide. Low test levels can result in a host of negative health issues such as low energy, muscle wasting, decreased libido, poor sleep and depression. As testosterone levels begin to decrease in men in their late 20's and become more pronounced as they age further, supplementing with natural testosterone boosters can assist the body produce more testosterone, enhancing libido, muscle growth, recovery and strength levels.
Completely separate from anabolic steroids which consist of synthetic testosterone taken to artificially enhance muscle mass and recovery, test boosters allow the user's body to naturally produce more free testosterone, and therefore do not subject the user to the same side effects as steroids. Most test boosters are made up of a combination of herbal ingredients, many of which are clinically-proven to increase testosterone levels.
Here's what to look for:
- D-Aspartic Acid - Shortened to DAA, d-aspartic acid is an amino acid which has shown to have a significant impact on testosterone levels. One study showed a 40% increase in testosterone levels after 12 days of supplementing with 3.12g of DAA daily. For a natural ingredient to produce a result like this is fairly astonishing. Look for a 3g dose of DAA in your test booster, although there are only a few out there that will have it in that amount.
- Fenugreek - One of the more popular herbs utilised for testosterone-boosting effects is fenugreek (sometimes written as trigonella foenum-graecum), which is a plant native to India and North Africa. Research has shown that a 500-600mg dose daily improves libido, elevates testosterone levels, reduces fat mass and increases strength.
- Longjack - Another important herb beneficial to testosterone levels is found in South-East Asia, and is also known as Tongkat Ali or eurycoma longifolia. Longjack has undergone a number of university-based research studies, and has been shown to boost testosterone levels significantly, both in humans and animals. While the studies varied in their dosages, anywhere from 100mg to 700mg of longjack extract was used per day.
- L-Carnitine Tartrate - While l-carnitine tartrate has not been shown to increase testosterone levels itself, it has an important function in test production. When supplementing with l-carnitine tartrate, test subjects increased the numbers of cell receptors. These bind to free testosterone in the bloodstream and allow it to be utilised. So rather than increasing test levels, carntine tartrate improves the ability of the body to utilise testosterone. Look for around 2g of l-carnitine tartrate per day.
Test boosters are extremely popular nowadays as weight trainers and other athletes benefit from the improvements to physique and performance they can offer. By supplementing with a testosterone boosting supplement that contains a mix of DAA, fenugreek, longjack and l-carnitine tartrate, you can safely and naturally elevate your testosterone levels, and reap the benefits of increased muscle mass, improved libido, higher strength levels and better recovery.
