What is Taurine?
Taurine is a conditionally-essential amino sulfonic acid found mainly in animal tissues. It makes up a large part of bile, and is also found in skeletal muscles, the large intestine, in white blood cells and the heart muscles. Taurine was discovered from ox bile in 1827, which is where the name comes from (ox in Latin is Taurus).

Taurine is available from a number of sources, mainly in seafood and meat. Taurine, being a conditionally-essential amino can be produced by the human body under certain conditions. It is also found in certain plants, such as seaweed and fungi, and is widely used in energy drinks and sports supplements.
What are Taurine's Benefits?
Taurine is most commonly found in energy drinks for the benefits it provides to energy levels, mental focus and concentration, although research isn't clear on this. There are a number of research studies which suggest taurine can:
- Improve heart function
- Provide antioxidant benefits
- Improve vision
- Improve glucose tolerance
- Increase vasodilation (bloodflow), which boosts nitric oxide levels

No side effects have been discovered from taurine use.
Who should use Taurine?
Taurine can be used by anybody who wants to experience the benefits listed above. As with most supplements, pregnant women should steer clear.
The recommended daily dosage of taurine depends on whether you are treating a condition such as heart failure or diabetes, or if you are looking to improve your workout performance or receive an antioxidant boost. For treating a condition, exact dosages should be discussed with your doctor. Research studies have generally used around 3,000mg of taurine per day, split over two or three intakes for ergogenic benefits.
