What is Tyrosine?
Tyrosine is one of 22 amino acids in protein, and is a non-essential amino acid (meaning that the body can produce it on its own). Tyrosine comes from the Greek word tyri meaning cheese, which is where it was first discovered in 1846.
Where can I get Tyrosine from?
Tyrosine is made in the human body from phenylalanine, another amino acid. Tyrosine is also available in many high-protein foods such as meat, fish, dairy, eggs, beans and nuts. Tyrosine is also a common ingredient in many supplements.
What are Tyrosine's Benefits?
Tyrosine provides a number of benefits to health and physical performance. Supplementing with Tyrosine has been shown to:
- Improve mental and physical performance (especially under stress)
- Enhance mood
- Reduce withdrawal symptoms associated with alcohol addiction
- Possibly treat Parkinson's disease
What are Tyrosine's Side Effects?
Tyrosine supplementation has not led to any significant side effects when taken at moderate doses. Some possible side effects of tyrosine supplementation are:
- Rapid heart beat
- Worsening effects of hyperthyroidism
The generally accepted daily dosage of tyrosine as researched in the majority of peer-reviewed studies is 150mg/kg of bodyweight. This would equate to 12g of tyrosine per day for an 80kg person. For best effects, the dosage should be split over multiple intakes.
