What is the Best Testosterone Booster?

Testosterone boosting supplements, or ‘test boosters', have become very popular in the bodybuilding supplement world recently, and most supplement companies have released one (or multiple) testosterone supplements. Test boosters are often misunderstood as supplements, and are often lumped in with steroids or other illegal performance enhancers. The purpose of this article is to educate about natural testosterone boosting supplements, and why they can be of benefit to anyone undertaking weight or aerobic training.

What is Testosterone?

Testosterone is an anabolic hormone, produced by males (in the testes) and females (in the ovaries), although females generally have approximately 8 times lower test levels than males. Testosterone contributes to a number of androgenic processes in the human body, including voice deepening, hair growth, muscle growth, sexual function and bone strengthening. This is one of the main reasons why women have less muscle, higher voices and less body hair than men. It's due to the muscle building capabilities of testosterone that athletes began injecting it in an effort to build more muscle. It's this unnatural addition of testosterone that is illegal and dangerous, which shouldn't be confused with the body's natural production of the hormone.

Ways to Boost Testosterone

Low testosterone levels are associated with a number of disorders, including depression, fatigue, muscle loss and decreased strength. There are a number of ways to increase your body's production of testosterone without the need for prescription medication. Some of these include increasing fat intake, undergoing resistance training, sleeping more, eating certain foods such as oysters and nuts, and of course, testosterone boosting supplements.

Testosterone Boosting Supplements

There are a number of ingredients proven to naturally increase testosterone levels, to increase androgen receptors which bind to free testosterone, and to combat estrogen (which limits testosterone availability). Some of the most popular and most effective ingredients are:

  • D-Aspartic Acid - Although a relative newcomer to testosterone boosting supplements, D-Aspartic Acid (DAA) is one of the most beneficial ingredients included in these products. An Italian research study found that by using 3.12g of DAA per day, test subjects increased their free testosterone levels by 40% in 12 days. For a supplement, where a 10% benefit is a regarded as a very good result, a 40% increase is excellent! D-Aspartic Acid is now found in a number of testosterone boosting supplements, as well as on its' own in powder and capsule form.
  • Fenugreek - Another widely used ingredient in test boosters, Fenugreek has been shown by research to increase testosterone levels with continued use. It has also been used often for its' libido enhancing properties.
  • Tongkat Ali - Tongkat Ali, also known as Longjack, has been used in traditional medicines for many years although has only recently found its' way into testosterone boosting supplements. Tongkat Ali has been used for a variety of medicinal benefits, including bone strengthening, libido enhancing and anti-diabetic properties.
  • Tribulus Terrestris - Tribulus is by far the most utilised ingredient in testosterone boosting supplements, although there is widespread disagreement over its' value as a supplement. A number of studies have found that supplementation with Tribulus does not increase testosterone levels, while one widely referenced study suggests the opposite. In any event, Tribulus has been used for years as a sexual enhancer and this might in turn lead to increased testosterone levels.

What is the Best Testosterone Boosting Supplement?

For the hundreds of test boosters on the market, each with their own incredible claims, there are many that fall well short of their claims. The products listed below are amongst the most popular and have the best ingredients lists available.

Ronnie Coleman Testogen-XR

This testosterone boosting supplement comes in powder form, and was one of the first to combine a number of the key ingredients proven to increase testosterone levels into a powder. Testogen-XR combines D-Aspartic Acid, L-Carnitine Tartrate, Agmatine, Horny Goat Weed and a number of other powerful ingredients into a small serving size. The added benefit of Testogen-XR is that it is a pre-workout powder as well, meaning the benefits of enhanced bloodflow, vascularity and energy levels can be felt along with the increased testosterone levels.

Nutrabolics Hemotest

Hemotest comes in tablet form, and is one of the most popular test boosters on the market. Although it combines 17 active ingredients into the mix, the main ingredient used is Fenugreek, which is one of the most effective testosterone enhancers. It also combines Tribulus, Longjack, Rhodiola, Hawthorn Berry and a number of other natural ingredients to effectively increase testosterone levels, while keeping estrogen and DHT in check.

BPI A-HD

BPI's products are usually very different to other supplement companies', and their testosterone booster A-HD is one of these that deviates from the norm. It is widely regarded as one of the strongest test boosters on the market, and doesn't feature any of the herbal extracts in most of the other supplements.

Body Ripped Androbolin Max

With only five key ingredients, Body Ripped Androbolin Max is one of the most simple and effective test boosters available. The main ingredient used is Tribulus, in a fairly large dose, and is accompanied by Coleus Forskohlii, Zinc, Avena Sativa and Ginseng. These ingredients work in tandem to boost testosterone levels, to enhance metabolism, and to increase libido.

While any of the four test boosters selected should result in an increase in testosterone levels, there are a number of others on the market that contain good combinations of the most effective ingredients, and can also be used to enhance your muscle building and libido. Just remember to follow the directions, to cycle your use of test boosters, and to track your results!
