Cellucor C4 Ultimate Review
Cellucor C4 Ultimate

Cellucor’s C4 range just keeps expanding, so to go along with the C4 G4 series pre-workout, and the more recent C4 50x, C4 Mass and C4 Ripped, Cellucor have identified other pre-workout gaps which need to be filled. Enter Cellucor C4 Ultimate.

C4 Ultimate is indeed the ‘ultimate’ pre-workout choice for anyone who is looking for a fully-dosed pre-workout. This was one of the biggest complaints Cellucor C4 had endured for years: how can a 6.5g serving size (standard C4) give me all the ingredients I need to excel during my workouts? Even the heavily-dosed C4 Mass at 34g per scoop only contains ~5g of active ingredients once the carbs are removed from each serving – compare this to 23g active ingredients in Kaged Muscle Pre-Kaged or 22g in JYM Pre JYM and you can see a huge discrepancy. Well, that’s why C4 Ultimate has been released – as a direct competitor to the fully-dosed pre-workouts on the market, coming in at a respectable 17g active ingredients per serve. Time to break it down.

Cellucor C4 Ultimate Key Ingredients

This is without a doubt our favourite Cellucor label of all time – nice doses, fully-transparent and a great mix of ingredients.

- Citrulline Malate (6000mg) – A nice hit of citrulline malate is first up in C4 Ultimate – an ingredient well-known for dilating blood vessels to increase nutrient delivery and the ‘pump’. Citrulline also reduces muscle soreness and increases training volume. Some products like to dose citrulline by itself, and others citrulline malate. Either way, 6g is a decent hit.

- Carnosyn Beta Alanine (3200mg) – Another full dose, beta-alanine is a staple in most pre-workouts thanks to its’ ability to boost endurance, improve body composition and reduce fatigue.

- BetaPower Betaine Anhydrous (1500mg) – Next up is betaine, a naturally-occurring ingredient found in beetroot and within the body also. Betaine has had several promising studies showing its’ benefits particularly upon endurance and power output.

- Creatine Nitrate (1500mg) – While creatine is a favourite of almost anyone supplementing for athletic performance, the creatine form found in Cellucor’s range is creatine nitrate, which distinguishes it somewhat from the competition. While creatine’s benefits are well-known (strength, power, endurance, muscle growth and reduced fatigue), creatine nitrate is more soluble than regular creatine monohydrate, and believed to have addition nitrate benefits (increased bloodflow and nutrient delivery).

- Ultimate Energy and Focus Blend (805mg) – One of the most important considerations for a good pre-workout is the energy and focus ingredients – there’s no point improving your strength or endurance if you aren’t motivated for training to begin with. C4 Ultimate blends n-acetyl-l-tyrosine, caffeine anhydrous (300mg), citrus aurantium, theacrine and toothed clubmoss for a fairly powerful focus and energy blend.

Cellucor C4 Ultimate Flavours and Sizes

C4 Ultimate comes in a 380g tub, which is 20 x 19g serves. Flavours on offer are Cherry Limeade, Strawberry Watermelon and Icy Blue Razz.

Cellucor C4 Ultimate Dosage

One of C4’s biggest complaints from the supplement community in the past was dosages of key ingredients. Many believed you needed multiple scoops of the standard C4 to maximise your training and recovery potential. These concerns have been well-address with C4 Ultimate, with the majority of ingredients delivered at full, valid doses. For example, citrulline malate at 6g, caffeine at 300mg, beta alanine at 3200mg and betaine at 1500mg – are all validated by research. Take one serve pre-workout, and no more.

Why we Like Cellucor C4 Ultimate

- Fully-dosed with brand-name raw materials (e.g. Carnosyn beta alanine, BetaPowder betaine and NO3-T creatine nitrate)
- One scoop per serve is all you need
- Delivers on pump, strength, endurance, energy and focus ingredients – it’s comprehensive

The Bottom Line

While fully-dosed pre-workouts of the past such as Gaspari Superpump Max and BSN No Xplode; and today’s Pre JYM and Pre-Kaged are world-leaders with good reason, the smart supplement companies acknowledge the trends away from concentrated and under-dosed pre-workouts, and are delivering exactly what the fans are asking for – fully-dosed, effective formulas. C4 Ultimate delivers this in spades; and while it comes in at a fairly pricey ~$4 per serve, it’s not out of touch with other similar pre-workouts, and will definitely take some share of the pre-workout market away from JYM and Kaged Muscle.
