If you're looking to boost your energy and strength levels for a workout, a pre-workout supplement is designed to do just that. Often a combination of strength, muscle and energy-improving ingredients, preworkouts can give you an edge when you're struggling to break a plateau, or set a new record.
Here are Protein King's choices for the best pre workout powders currently on the market. The criteria for a great pre-workout we are looking for are: energy boosters, strength boosters, taste and value for money.
3) Dymatize Xpand 2X
Dymatize Nutrition is one of the world's largest supplement companies, and is constantly improving its formulas to provide the best possible sports nutrition products for its customers. Xpand 2X is the reformulated version of Xpand Xtreme Pump, which was one of the best-selling preworkouts of the last few years.
Xpand 2X features a great blend of ingredients for energy (n-acetyl tyrosine, caffeine, glucuronolactone) and strength (creatine, beta-alanine, BCAA's), and is terrific value for around $1.30 per serve.
2) MusclePharm Assault
MusclePharm 's popularity has skyrocketed in the last few years, especially through products like Assault - one of their long-standing and excellently-received supplements. Assault has long been a favourite of consumers, and especially athletes who are worried about taking banned substances. Assault is certified banned-substance free.
Although it's not one of the most powerful pre-workout supplements on the market, it definitely makes up for it in terms of ergogenic ingredients, featuring some of the largest doses of BCAA's (3g), creatine (2.5g) and beta-alanine (2g) per serve. It also utilises uptake nutrients Astragin and Cinnulin to make sure the ingredients are absorbed well. It is available in a variety of delicious flavours such as Raspberry Lemonade and Orange Mango. Assault also comes in at a great price - around $1.50 per serve.
1) Cellucor M5 Extreme
M5 Extreme's package is divided in to two compartments - one filled with the energy-boosting ingredients such as caffeine, tyrosine and bitter orange, while the other is filled with the strength-boosting ingredients such as creatine, beta-alanine and arginine. The user can pick the amount of stimulant they want in their supplement, which is an excellent idea for anyone who likes to see how they feel on the day before deciding whether to use a pre-workout or not.
M5 Extreme features excellent dosages of all the key ingredients, including 5 grams of creatine (in two forms), 2.5g of beta-alanine, 160mg of caffeine and 3g of arginine per serve. There are 60 serves of the energy and 30 serves of the strength complex, which is perfect. The value is the only sticking point of M5 Extreme, costing approximately $2.33 per serve (2 x energy scoop and 1 x strength scoop), although the ratio of ingredients you're getting far outweighs any other preworkout supplement on the market.
