My first Quest bar experience was anything but pleasant. I’d been all #fitspo for about a year and thought that I was the bee’s knees when I went to buy my first bar. I can’t remember the flavour but I think it was chocolate something. I had one bite and vowed to never eat one again. It was sickeningly sweet but really bitter at the same time, long story short, my tastebuds were not impressed. Fast forward a year and I decided to bite the bullet and try again. I’d seen the same thing on Instagram over and over again, people were putting these bars into the microwave. Um, sorry, are you crazy? Still keen to be one of those girls who swore by Quest bars, I bought a white chocolate and raspberry flavour one and popped it into the microwave for 30 seconds (most people microwave for about 10 seconds but I like to live life dangerously). My life will never be the same.
It turned into a cookie. A white chocolate and raspberry protein cookie. Hard on the outside but soft and chewy on the inside. I was hooked.
I made it my mission to test out every flavour and report back on what I thought of each of them. (I’m not one to back down from any challenge involving food). Sure, Quest bars aren’t for everyone, on average, they pack in a whopping 200 calories per serve with about 20g of protein and 20g carbs (most of which is fiber) and less than 3g of sugar. But considering all the other protein bars on the market, Quest is by far the tastiest and if you need something quick and nutritious when you’re super busy, they are actually perfection.
1. White Chocolate and Raspberry.
This flavour is probably my second favourite. White chocolate, in my opinion, is the best kind of chocolate so naturally, this was the first one I grabbed when I decided to try Quest bars again. There are literally chunks of white chocolate in the bar. If you’re on Instagram, search the hashtag #chunkporn and you’ll see what I mean. Because I like to break rules, I popped it in the microwave for 20 seconds; it expands into a gooey piece of heaven. Seriously, try it, you won’t regret it. Macro wise, it’s pretty good. It’s 190 calories per serve, with 8g fat, 23g carbs (17g fiber, 1g sugar) and 20g protein. Overall, 8.5/10.
IS THIS WHAT HEAVEN TASTES LIKE? Hands down, the best thing I have ever tasted. Besides pizza. And peanut butter. And ice cream. Okay, maybe not the best thing I have ever tasted but it’s definitely up there. Again, chunks of chocolate and marshmellowy goodness. It does have that incredibly recognisable taste of sweetener but I can overlook that because seriously, it’s amazing. Microwaving it does exactly what you would expect. It turns into a S’mores cookie. The chocolate melts. The inside is soft and chewy. And I’ll stop there because my mouth is actually watering. Macros are also pretty good, 180 calories, 8g fat, 23g carbs (13g fiber, ZERO sugar) and 20g protein. Overall, 10/10.
3. Cookies and Cream.
Pretty good actually. I have had this one in the past but it must have been a dud bar because it wasn’t nearly as good as the one I had today. It’s got tiny chunks of what I think are Oreo-like cookies so that’s amazing. Microwaved is obviously better. Tastes amazing. Standard macros: 180 calories, 7g fat, 22g carbs (17g fiber, 1g sugar) and 21g protein. I can definitely understand why people say this is their favourite. Probably 7.5/10.
4. Strawberry Cheesecake.
I’m a bit on the fence with this one. Cheesecake is one of my absolute favourite things ever. So I expected to love this one. But I didn’t. Don’t get me wrong, it tastes pretty good but not like a cheesecake at all. The strawberry flavour is a bit overpowering. Don’t even try to microwave it. This bar is a bit thinner than all the other ones, it didn’t turn into a gooey cookie. It just kind of sizzled a bit and returned to normal. Slightly different macros, this one is pretty low in calories (160 calories per serve) 4.5g fat, slightly higher in carbs at 26g (17g fiber, 2g sugar) and 20g protein. Overall, 6/10.
5. Peanut Butter Supreme
Okay so this one just knocked White Chocolate & Raspberry out of second place. Peanut Butter is one of my biggest weaknesses so I was a bit worried about developing an addiction to this flavour. I wasn’t disappointed (it’s definitely in my top 5) but it tastes nothing like peanut butter, it’s nutty but not peanut buttery. As is, it’s pretty amazing; I struggled to stop at half (I needed to microwave the other half). It’s a bit nutty but tastes incredible and is legit even better warmed up. As much as I loved the flavour, I probably won’t be buying it very often as it is one of the highest in macros (210 calories, 10g fat, 21g carbs: 17g fibre, 2g sugar and 20g protein) So unfortunately it throws my meals out for the day a bit too much. Overall 9/10.
6. Double Chocolate Chunk
I’m still a bit undecided about this one. The chocolate taste is a little bitter BUT just as you think you don’t like it, you bite into a massive chocolate chunk and everything changes. It’s good, I can understand why people love this flavour. Microwaved, it’s definitely better. It tastes like a chocolate cake cookie. Another plus is it’s the lowest in calories, only 160 per serve AND only 6g of fat. It’s got the average 20g of protein and 25g of carbs (16g fiber, 1g sugar) Overall 7/10.
7. Vanilla Almond Crunch
Not my favourite, it has a bit of a boring taste and I barely noticed the almonds. It’s sickly sweet as well BUT as always, microwaved is 10 times better. It was a vanilla almond biscuit. Not even a cookie (cookies to me are soft and gooey, biscuits almost break your teeth, am I right?) It was still amazing though. Macros are pretty good, 190 calories, 8g fat, 21g carbs (18 fiber, 1g sugar) and 20g of protein. Overall, 7/10.
8. Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough
This one ALMOST knocked S’mores out of the top spot. I love cookie dough. If it didn’t “apparently” give you food poisoning, I would literally eat it raw. All day. Every day. As is, this bar is amazing. It tastes exactly like cookie dough. Heated up, obviously better. Macros are quite standard, 190 calories, 8g fat, 21g carbs (17g fiber, 1g sugar) and 21g protein. Overall, 9.5/10
* EDIT: I bought this one again because I loved it so much. I think it might be tied in first place with S’mores. Changing rating to 10/10.
9. Chocolate Brownie
Straight out the packaging, this is so far the most disappointing one I’ve tried. It’s got the most protein bar like texture and tastes nothing like a chocolate brownie. It’s got that weirdly bittersweet artificial taste that left my taste buds wondering why I would do this to them. Straight out the microwave, still warm, so much better. Definitely has the brownie taste and texture (just missing the hot chocolate sauce that’s meant to be poured over!) I left it for a while to see how that would change things, once it turned into a cookie, it was definitely better! It tasted more like chocolate cake though. But I’m not complaining. Decent macros, 170 calories, 6g fat, 24g carb (19g fibre, 1g sugar) and 20g protein. Overall, 6/10.
10. Chocolate Peanut Butter
I was a bit disappointed with this one. It’s got the consistency (is that the right word?) and taste of a sub standard protein bar and I battled to taste the peanut butter as it is. Microwaving it did make it taste a lot better. Kind of like a chocolate cookie. Still waiting for the peanut butter though. One of the lowest calorie flavours available, 160 calories, 5g fat, 25g carbs (17g fibre, 2g sugar) and 20g protein. 7/10
More flavours coming soon! (I wish I could have fitted all the flavours into a week but my macros would have been ridiculous).
