What are Vitamins?
Vitamins are organic compounds which are needed by our body in order to grow and develop normally. There are 13 essential vitamins that our body needs, grouped under an alphabetized descriptor. They are known for their differing biochemical functions, for example some of them act like antioxidants and some regulate the growth of cells and tissues.
Most food we eat contains vitamins, however certain dietary insufficiencies (such as B12 for vegetarians) are common. This is where supplementing with vitamins such as multivitamin products may be necessary.
Vitamin D is a steroid vitamin, it promotes the absorption of calcium and phosphorous. Sunlight is the best natural source of this vitamin, which is synthesized in human skin.
There are five types of vitamin D - D1, D2, D3, D4 and D5, however only vitamins D2 and D3 are of importance to humans.
Benefits of Vitamin D
Vitamin D has a number of benefits which are necessary for normal body function. Some of the important functions of vitamin D are:
- Helps maintain healthy bones
- Regulates the immune system
- Assists healthy brain function
- Helps maintain body weight
- May help prevent arthritis
- Reducing risk of heart disease and cancer
Supplementing with Vitamin D
Vitamin D can be synthesized from direct sunlight - so it's important to receive an adequate amount of sunlight daily. For those who aren't exposed to the sun much, or for anyone who has naturally deficient levels of vitamin D, supplementing with this will help raise levels in the body and provide a whole host of benefits.
Be sure to follow all recommendations on the label and of your healthcare professional.
